Introduction
Homefirst Trust Logo Homefirst Trust provides community health, mental health and social care services for people in the borough and district council areas of Antrim, Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Cookstown, Larne, Magherafelt and Newtownabbey.

The social care and disability directorate of the Trust is responsible for the provision of services for adults with learning disabilities and their families. One of these services, Supported Living, is the focus of a bespoke learning resource developed by New Horizons Partnership.

Supporting People

New Horizons Partnership was commissioned to design and develop a multimedia-based training programme for adults with learning disabilities who are current or prospective tenants of Homefirst Trust's Supported Living.

Homefirst Trust wanted a training programme which would:

  • help tenants of supported living understand what it is like to live in supported living
  • explain - in a way tenants can understand - their rights and responsibilities and the support and care that staff can provide to each individual
  • explain about assessment, care and support planning, person centred planning and review
  • help people who would like to move to supported living to understand what it is like and how it works in practice

The programme, called "Supporting People", includes a handbook for tenants, with pictures to support learning and assessment to test understanding on material taught. Additional teaching materials include video, animation and PDF examples of Homefirst Trust documentation.

Training of Trainers

New Horizons Partnership designed a training day for Homefirst staff to teach them how to use the "Supporting People" resource with their tenants and prospective tenants. The resource can also be used by social workers and any other care professionals who are involved in providing related services to the client group.
